Everyone photographs the same view from the same viewpoint. Here is what the guidebooks leave out — including how cold it actually gets.
The photograph you have seen of Mount Bromo was almost certainly taken from Penanjakan, on the outer rim, at around 5:20am. It is a genuinely extraordinary view and there is no shame in wanting it.
What the photograph does not convey is the temperature. At 2,770 metres before dawn, the caldera regularly sits between 3°C and 7°C, and in July it can touch freezing. Most people arrive in what they wore in Surabaya the day before.
The second thing it does not convey is the crowd. On a dry-season weekend there can be several hundred people on that platform. If you would rather not be among them, ask to be taken to King Kong Hill or Bukit Cinta instead — lower, less famous, and often better in haze.
The third thing: the sunrise is not the best part. Crossing the sand sea on foot afterwards, when the jeeps have gone and the light is flat and gold, is quieter and stranger and stays with people longer.
